ALMERE, The Netherlands – An early Friday morning. I step into the hairsalon. And there she is. Chantal Sporkslede (nickname “Nuby”). A petite, beautiful looking young woman with a gorgious smile. I look at her natural, healthy, shining hair and I think to myself: No doubt, this girl knows what she is talking about. Time for an interview with this award winning beauty therapist!
What was your first thought when you woke up this morning?
Why (and when) did you start Nuby’s Hairstyling?
I started Nuby’s Hairstyling in 2002. It was a “regular”salon for European hairstyles. In recent years, the hairstyles of women of color has changed; It is increasingly common that women with Black & or Mixed hair, who for years are accustomed to chemically straighten their hair, go back to their own natural, kinky curly hair. During my own “transition”, which started in 2012, I discovered how to treat natural curly hair, which products are appropriate etc.
Only a few professional salons in the Netherlands were specialized in natural kinky & curly hair. With this knowledge I knew that I could help a lot more natural hair clients. I followed workshops and courses for natural kinky/curly hair. This knowledge, I would very much like to share. Hence my choice to specialize.
What makes you different from other hair dressers?
I do what I say and I say what I do. I give my clients a clear description of my ability as a beauty therapist and live up to that description. Furthermore, you will get high quality, excellent customer service, a trendy look and a short wait in a cozy atmosphere.
What is your favorite hair product?
Good hair masks and shampoos are essential as a base for beautiful & healthy hair. My favo products are the Quinoa/Bamboo treatment and the Deep Fortifying treatment of the Natural line of Design Essentials. You can find these products at my website.
What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of?
Being the first winner in history of the Dutch blackhair salon award 2015 and that I have cancelled my regular job to pursue my dream.
What is your favorite thing to spend money on?
I always invest in good high quality products, advertising & and workshops. On a personal level I love online shopping.
Saoto soup!! This is a Surinamese Javanese meal soup based on a home-made chicken broth with various garnishes such as rice, bean sprouts, fried vermicelli, a boiled egg etc.
What is your most embarrassing moment?
Hahahaha! Those moments are too embarrasing to remember. So I save none (Not even for money).
A dog or a cat lover?
Well….. We have a rabbit called Swaggy.
How do you spend your free time?
I love to hang out with my partner and 2 sons and socialize with friends. You can also find me in the gym, after a hard day of work.
How would your friends describe you?
According to my friends: “Nuby has a heart for her case and especially for beautiful hair. As a colleague she is reliable, kind, helpful and a walking piece of jewelry in the salon.”
